Beneath the surface of the forest floor, tree roots are closely bounded with huge networks of fungi that allow them to better uptake nutrients and water. Underground networks also provide fascinating ways for trees to communicate with each other.

  My absolute favorite in the series “looking up” is this common (European) beech in the forest surrounding Lake Lamar in the northern Italy. I just love these crooked branches spreading in all directions, so much that I made it into a large canvas for my bedroom wall and now I get to dream under its canopy.
