Around 80% of the planet’s fresh water originates in the mountains, and flows downwards to form major rivers.
Mountains are very rich in biodiversity, and inhabited by numerous species that are unique for certain parts of the world. Ecologically, mountains act as isolated islands in the landscape, separated from each other by lowland regions, whose drastically different ecological conditions prevent high-altitude species from spreading.

The elevation where trees in the mountains no longer grow is called the tree line. Here, life has to be adapted to harsh conditions, such as low temperatures, high UV radiation and shortage of water. Here lichens - dual organisms of fungi and algae – add marvelous colors. They may seem dead, but yet they´re anything but: low-demanding and slow-growing, lichens can live for thousands of years, even in some or the most extreme environments - from the highest peaks and arctic tundras, to hot dry deserts.

Nadmorska visina iznad koje drveće na planinama više ne raste zove se gornja šumska granica. U planinskim vrhovima, život je prilagođen surovim uslovima: niskim temperaturama, jakom UV zračenju i nedostatku vode. Ovde lišajevi –organizmi dvostruke prirode, sačinjeni od gljive i od alge – unose živopisne boje. Lišajevi možda deluju mrtvo, ali to svakako nisu - skromnih prohteva, sporo rastu ali zato mogu živeti hiljadama godina, i to u nekim od najesktremnijih uslova – od najviših vrhova i arktičkih tundri, do vrelih pustinja. -
